ラテン語 designare（印をつける）から。de-（下に）+ signare（記号をつける）に分解でき、「図に落とし込む→設計する」へ発展。同根語に design（設計）、signal（信号）がある。「記号で示す」が原義なので、構想を形にする意味につながる。
