覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
Dexter は男性名または姓なので、通常は Dexter と大文字で書きます。ラテン語 dexter「右側の、右手の」と dexterous「器用な」を結びつけると綴りを保ちやすくなります。ただし現代の人名を文中で見ても、その人物が実際に右利き・器用だという意味にはなりません。
Connect the name Dexter with Latin dexter, “right” or “on the right side,” and with the English adjective dexterous, meaning skillful with the hands. This link makes the spelling easier to retain: Dexter begins exactly like dexterous. In modern use, however, the name does not tell you that its bearer is right-handed or especially skillful; it simply identifies a person. Remember the capital D and place it in ordinary name patterns such as “Dexter is waiting,” “I sent it to Dexter,” and “Dexter helped organize the files.”

dexter の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語dexter(右手の、器用な)が語源。古代ローマでは右側が吉兆・有能の象徴だった。英語のdexterous(器用な)やambidextrous(両利きの、ambi-+dexter)と同根。人名としては「右手のように有能な者」という意味を込めて名付けられた。
Dexter comes from Latin dexter, meaning “right” or “on the right-hand side.” The right side was traditionally associated with favorable qualities, and the same Latin base appears in dexterous, originally referring to skill or readiness with the right hand, and ambidextrous, literally involving both right hands. Dexter developed as a surname and later as a masculine given name. Any favorable implication belongs to the name’s history, not necessarily to an individual bearer.
