ラテン語dexter（右手の、器用な）が語源。古代ローマでは右側が吉兆・有能の象徴だった。英語のdexterous（器用な）やambidextrous（両利きの、ambi-＋dexter）と同根。人名としては「右手のように有能な者」という意味を込めて名付けられた。
