diesel は、ディーゼル燃料やディーゼルエンジンを指す語です。日本語の「ディーゼル」とほぼ同じですが、英語では燃料そのものを指して diesel と言うことも多いです。
Diesel is a type of liquid fuel used especially in compression-ignition engines, or it can refer to an engine or vehicle that uses this fuel. In expressions such as “run on diesel,” the word specifically denotes the fuel.

ドイツの技術者Rudolf Diesel（ルドルフ・ディーゼル）の姓に由来。彼が1893年に発明した内燃機関がdiesel engineと呼ばれ、その燃料もdieselと呼ばれるようになった。姓Dieselは古高ドイツ語のdiuzil（人民の）に遡るとされる。
Diesel is an eponym derived from the surname of the German engineer Rudolf Diesel. In the 1890s, he developed the compression-ignition internal-combustion engine that became known as the diesel engine. The shortened noun diesel was subsequently applied both to engines of this type and to the fuel formulated for them. Thus, the modern fuel name developed from a person’s surname through the name of an invention.
