A diphthong is a vowel sound in which the mouth moves from one vowel position to another within the same syllable. It is used in pronunciation and linguistics to describe certain sounds in language. This is a technical term for speech and sound study.

発音・音声学で出る語として、まず mono-/di- の対で覚えると整理しやすいです。monophthong が1つの母音のまま保たれる音なら、diphthong は1音節の中で母音の響きが滑って変わる音。英語の /ai/ in time、/ou/ in go を思い浮かべると定着します。「母音が2つ並ぶ文字」ではなく、「1拍の中で口の形が移動する音」という感覚で押さえると、単なる母音連続や綴りの複雑さと混同しにくくなります。
