ラテン語discus（円盤）からで、さらにギリシャ語diskos（投げる円盤）に遡る。語根はdik-（投げる）。円盤投げの競技用具が原義で、disk（ディスク）と綴り違いの同語。同根語にdiscus（円盤投げ）やdisco（円盤状レコードで踊る場所）がある。
