disseminates の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語 disseminare(dis-「広く」+ seminare「種を蒔く」、semen「種」より)が語源。種を撒くように情報を広める意。同根語に seminar(種蒔きの場→学びの場)、seminary がある。「種を四方に蒔く=広める」というイメージ。

Disseminates is formed by adding the third-person singular present ending -s to disseminate. Disseminate comes from Latin disseminare, combining dis-, conveying distribution in different directions, with seminare, “to sow.” Seminare derives from semen, “seed.” The literal image of scattering seed developed into the figurative sense of spreading information, ideas, or knowledge widely. Seminar and seminary are historically related through the same Latin seed family.
