curragh はアイルランド語 currach、さらに古アイルランド語 curach「革張りの舟」に由来する借用語。語形そのものに「革の船」の発想が残り、同系とされる coracle や、革を表す corium を思い出すと、この小舟の素材感まで意味に入っていると分かる。
