seminar はラテン語 seminarium「苗床、育成の場」にさかのぼり、さらに semen「種」から来た語です。語根 semin- は「種をまく」感覚で、関連語に seminal、disseminate があり、知識の種を育てる場という意味につながります。
Seminar comes through German Seminar from Latin seminarium, literally a seed plot or nursery and later a place of education or training. Seminarium derives from semen, “seed.” The educational sense developed through institutions in which future clergy and scholars were trained, as if their abilities were being cultivated.
