explode はラテン語 explodere に由来し、ex-「外へ」+ plaudere「手を打つ」が元です。applaud や applause と同じ plaud- を持ち、もとは「拍手で追い払う」ことだったのが、勢いよく外へ破裂する意味へ転じたのが見えてきます。
Explode comes from Latin explodere, from ex- "out" and plaudere "to clap." It originally meant to drive someone off the stage by clapping or booing. Later, the idea shifted to something bursting outward with force; applaud and applause come from the same plaud- root.
