Explosiveness is the quality of being able to burst out suddenly with great force or energy. It can describe physical danger, such as chemicals, or strong power and speed, such as in sports. The meaning changes slightly depending on whether the context is literal or figurative.
`Explosiveness` comes from the image of an explosion: power released very fast. In sports, it is not general strength but quick, sudden force, like a sharp first step or a high jump. Remember it beside `strength` and `endurance` as the word for burst power.
The soccer player's explosiveness allowed him to jump higher than his opponents.
The explosiveness of the volcano caught the scientific team by surprise.
The team's offense had an explosiveness that overwhelmed every defense.

Explosiveness comes from explosive plus -ness, ultimately from explode. Explode goes back to Latin explodere, from ex- "out" and plaudere "to clap or strike," the same root seen in applaud. The sense moved from driving something off with clapping or noise to bursting outward violently, and explosiveness names that quality.
