ラテン語 attendere から。ad-（～に向かって）+ tendere（伸ばす・向ける）で「注意を向ける」が原義。注意を向ける→その場にいる→出席する、と意味が発展。関連語: attention（注意）、tend（傾く）。
Attend comes from Latin attendere, made from ad- "toward" and tendere "to stretch" or "direct." The basic idea was to stretch the mind toward something, in other words to pay attention.
