To intend means to have a plan or purpose to do something. It is used when someone has decided what they want to do, even if the action has not happened yet. It often appears before an action, result, or goal.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
intend は、まず名詞 intent「意図」や intention「意志」と同じ語族でまとめて覚えると定着しやすいです。基本形は intend to do で「〜するつもりだ」。plan より少し改まっていて、頭の中で方針を決めている感じが強め。I intend to study abroad. のように使います。be intended for で「〜向けに作られている」も頻出。attend とつづりが似ますが、attend は「出席する」で別物です。
Group it with `intent` and `intention`, which are from the same word family. The common pattern is `intend to do`, so you can link it directly to future plans in your mind. Be careful not to confuse it with `attend`, which looks similar but means something different.

intend はラテン語 intendere に由来し、in-「〜へ」+ tendere「伸ばす」から成ります。関連語に tension, attend。心をある方向へ「張る・伸ばす」という発想から、考えや目的を向ける、つまり「意図する」の意味になりました。
Intend comes from Latin intendere, built from in- "toward" and tendere "to stretch." The original image was of stretching or directing the mind toward something.
