ラテン語 intentio（注意を向けること）から。接頭辞 in-（〜に向けて）+ tendere（伸ばす）で「心を特定の方向に伸ばす」が原義。intense（激しい）やattention（注意）も同じ語根 tend-/tent- を共有する。意志を一点に張り詰める感覚。
