何かを意図的に、または意識的に行う特性や品質。心理学や哲学では、心が対象に向かう性質を指します。
Intentionality is the quality of being done with a clear purpose or plan. It is used in discussions about actions, design, communication, and decision-making to show that something was not accidental. In philosophy, it can also mean the way thoughts and feelings are directed toward something.

intentionality は intentional＋-ity「性質」で、さらにラテン語 intendere にさかのぼります。in-「〜へ」＋ tendere「伸ばす」から成り、関連語に intend, tension があります。心が何かへ向かって伸びる感覚から、哲学でいう「意識が対象をもつ性質」を表します。
Intentionality comes from intentional plus the noun ending -ity. Intentional goes back to Latin intendere, meaning "to stretch toward," from in- "toward" and tendere "to stretch"; the same root appears in intend, tension, and tend. From the idea of the mind reaching toward something, the word developed into the sense of being directed at an object or aim.
