王や王妃の息子で、王位継承者やロイヤルファミリーの一員として知られる男性の称号です。代々の儀式や公務に参加し、特に王位継承順位にある人物は次期国王としての責務を負うことがあります。称号には高い身分と社会的地位が伴い、国を代表する役割を担うこともある。
A prince is a male member of a royal family, usually the son or close relative of a king or queen. The word is mainly used when talking about monarchy, history, stories, or formal titles. In some cultures, it can also mean the ruler of a small state.

ラテン語 princeps（第一の者）から。prin-（最初の）+ -ceps（取る）で「最初に取る人＝指導者」。英語 principal（主要な）や principle（原理）も同根。「一番手の存在」が王子・君主の意味になった。
Prince comes from Latin princeps, meaning "first" or "chief." It was formed from elements meaning "first" and "to take," so the original sense was like "the one who takes first place" or "the leading person." From that idea of being first in rank, it came to mean a ruler or royal son; principal and principle share the same deeper root.
