解説 Definition
エフェクツ(effects)は「効果」「影響」「結果」を意味する名詞の複数形です。ある原因によってもたらされる変化や結果を指し、科学、医学、映像制作など幅広い分野で使われます。映画や演劇では視覚的・音響的な特殊効果(スペシャルエフェクト)を指すこともあります。

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
effect「原因から生じた結果・効果」の規則的な複数形で、語末の t の後の -s は /s/ と発音する。ex-「外へ」と facere「作る」に由来し、「外に作り出された結果」と捉える。effects of stress「ストレスの影響」、side effects「副作用」、special effects「特殊効果」の三つを定番表現として覚える。
Effects is the regular plural of effect, with /s/ at the end because effect finishes with the voiceless /t/ sound. Think of an effect as a result produced outside a cause: medication produces medical effects, stress has effects on health, and filmmaking creates special effects. Learn three frequent combinations—side effects, the effects of something, and special effects. To avoid the common confusion, remember that effect is usually the noun for a result, while affect is usually the verb meaning “influence.” The singular form is effect.

effects の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 effectus(達成、結果)から。ex-(外へ)+ facere(する、作る)で「作り出されたもの」が原義。関連語: affect(影響する), efficient(効率的な)。行為の外に生み出された結果、すなわち「効果」を意味する。
Effects is the plural of effect. Effect comes through Old French from Latin effectus, meaning an accomplishment, performance, or result. Effectus was related to efficere, “to bring about” or “accomplish,” formed from ex-, “out,” and facere, “to make or do.” The underlying image is therefore something brought into being by an action. English later extended the noun to created impressions and technical illusions, giving rise to expressions such as sound effects and special effects.
