ability はまず形容詞 able（〜できる）が土台。I am able to swim. の「できる」を名詞化したものだと考えると、「〜する力・能力」が自然に出る。よく the ability to do の形で使い、「〜する能力」と後ろに動作が続く。skill が特定の技術、talent が生まれつきの才能に寄りやすいのに対し、ability はもっと広く、学習で身につく力にも使える。disabled, capable など「できる／できない」系の語群と一緒に覚えると定着しやすい。

abilityはable+-ity。ableはラテン語habilis「扱いやすい、持てる」から来ており、abilityは本来「うまく扱える性質」です。habitやrehabilitateも同じhab-系で、「持つ・扱う」が意味の核だとわかります。
Ability is formed from able + -ity. Able came through French from Latin habilis, meaning "handy," "fit," or "easy to handle." So ability originally meant the quality of being capable or manageable, and related words like habit and rehabilitate come from the same Latin root family.
