competence はラテン語 competere に由来し、com-「共に」+ petere「求める・向かう」に分けられます。もとは「条件にきちんと合うこと」で、compete や competent と同根なので、「必要なものに適合している力」から「能力」になったと見えます。
Competence comes from Latin competere, made from com- meaning "together" and petere meaning "seek" or "aim at." It first carried the idea of being suitable or matching what is required. From there, it developed into the modern sense of having enough ability or fitness for a task, related to competent and compete.
