mishandling は古英語系の接頭辞 mis-「誤って」と、handle「手で扱う」から成る mishandle に -ing が付いた名詞です。もともと「手の扱いを間違える」がそのまま「不適切に処理する」へ広がった語で、handle や handler が関連語です。
Mishandling comes from mishandle plus the noun ending -ing. Mishandle joins mis-, meaning "wrongly," with handle, from hand, so its earliest sense was literally "to handle badly with the hands."
