deal は古英語 dǣlan「分ける・配る」、with は古英語 wiþ「向き合って」。分けると「相手と向き合って事を割り振る」で、問題を整理して片づける感覚から「対処する」になった。関連語に dole、dealing がある。
Deal comes from Old English dǣlan, meaning to divide or share out, and with comes from Old English wiþ, meaning against or in relation to.
