helpは古英語helpanから。ゲルマン祖語helpanに遡り「助ける・支える」が原義。withは古英語wiþで「～と共に」。関連語：helpful（助けになる）、helpless（無力な）。help単体で他動詞にもなるが、withを伴うと対象を明示する形になる。
