grapple は古フランス語由来の語で、もとは「鉤・つかむ道具」を表し、with は「相手に向かって」を添える。鉤で相手や対象に引っかかって離さない感じから、難題に正面から「取り組む」となる。grapnel や grape も同根とされる。
"Grapple" came from Old French and originally referred to a hook or gripping tool. "With" adds the sense of being engaged directly with something.
