物体の表面が光をどの程度反射するかを示す物理量。光学や材料科学で使われる。
Reflectance is the amount or percentage of light or other radiation that a surface sends back after it hits it. It is often used in science, engineering, photography, and materials testing. A high reflectance means the surface reflects a lot, while a low reflectance means it absorbs more.

reflectance は reflect「反射する・映す」を知っていれば取りやすい名詞。まず reflection が「反射・反映」、reflective が「反射する性質のある」とつなげ、その中で -ance は「性質・度合い」を表す名詞語尾だと押さえると、「どれだけ reflect するか」＝反射率と覚えやすい。optical reflectance のように光学文脈で出やすく、reflection そのものではなく“反射の割合・強さの指標”を指す点に注意。

Reflectance is built from reflect + the noun suffix -ance. Reflect comes from Latin reflectere, from re- "back" + flectere "to bend," with the idea of bending light back.
