雇用こようされている

解説 Definition

employed は「雇用されている」「職に就いている」という意味の形容詞です。仕事を持っている状態を表し、会社や組織に雇われている場合によく使います。

Employed means having paid work or holding a job, especially as a worker hired by a company, organization, or individual. It commonly appears after be and may be followed by at, as, or by to identify the workplace, role, or employer.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

employ「雇う・用いる」に -ed が付いた形で、be employed at a hotel、as a cook、by the city のように使います。ここでは一時的な動作より「職に就いている状態」を表す形容詞。unemployed「失業中」と対にし、at・as・by の後に何が来るかも一緒に覚えましょう。

Connect employed with the verb employ, “to hire or make use of,” plus -ed. In this entry, it describes a continuing state: an employed person has a job. Learn three useful patterns together: employed at a hotel identifies the workplace, employed as a cook identifies the role, and employed by the city identifies the employer. Contrast it with unemployed, which means not having a job. Although employed can also be a verb form meaning “used” or “hired,” the examples here use it specifically as an adjective about work status.

My brother is employed as a cook.

Many people are employed by the city.

employed の語源・成り立ち Etymology

employed は employ + -ed。employ は古フランス語 employer を経て、ラテン語 implicare「折り重ねる・巻き込む」に由来します。in-「中へ」+ plicare「折る」の感覚から、もとは「何かに取り込んで使う」で、そこから「雇われて働いている」となり、imply も同根です。

Employed is formed from employ and the ending -ed. Employ entered English through Old French employer and is ultimately associated with Latin implicare, “to enfold or involve,” built from in- and plicare, “to fold.” The sense developed through putting something to use or engaging someone in an activity, and then hiring someone for work. In this adjectival use, employed means engaged in paid work.
