Eskimo appears in early modern European forms, including English Esquimawes, and spread through contact among several European and Indigenous languages. Its deeper source is often linked to an Innu-aimun expression interpreted as referring to a person who laces or makes snowshoes. The once-common explanation “eater of raw meat” is now generally treated as doubtful or mistaken. Whatever its precise transmission history, the word became a broad external label for several Arctic peoples rather than the name of one single ethnic group.
