estimator は estimate + -or「する人・もの」で、estimate はラテン語 aestimare「価値を見積もる」にさかのぼります。もとは価値を量る語なので、estimator が「推定するもの」になるのは自然で、esteem や estimate にも同じ感覚が残ります。
Estimator comes from estimate + the suffix -or, meaning "a person or thing that does something." Estimate goes back to Latin aestimare, meaning "to value" or "to judge."
