Extrinsic means coming from outside rather than from the nature of the thing itself. It is often used for outside causes, influences, or rewards, such as money or praise. The opposite idea is intrinsic.

まず intrinsic（内在的な）とセットで覚えるのがいちばん定着します。in- が「内」、ex-/extra- が「外」と見えれば、extrinsic は『そのものの中身ではなく、外側の事情で決まる』という感覚で取れます。特によく出るのが extrinsic motivation で、興味そのものから湧く intrinsic motivation と対比され、報酬・評価・罰など外から与えられる動機を指します。external が単に「外部の」なのに対し、extrinsic は「外部要因に由来する」というニュアンスまで含む、と分けると混同しにくいです。
Learn it together with "intrinsic." If "in-" suggests inside and "ex-/extra-" suggests outside, then "extrinsic" is easy to connect with outside causes. A very common pair is "extrinsic motivation" versus "intrinsic motivation."
