農地が耕されたまま作物を植えずに休ませている状態を指す形容詞です。土壌の回復を図るために一定期間使用しない農地を表します。
Fallow describes farmland that is left unused for a period so the soil can recover. It is mainly used in farming and environmental contexts. It can also be used more generally for something inactive for a time, though that use is less literal.

農業の fallow は古英語 fealh「耕して種をまかない土地」に由来し、ゲルマン祖語 *falgo にさかのぼります。関連語はドイツ語 Felge や東フリジア語 falge。土を返して休ませる土地なので、「休閑の」という意味になります。
Fallow comes from Old English fealh, used for plowed land left unsown, and goes back to an older Germanic root. The word referred to farmland that was turned over and then allowed to rest. From that farming practice, it developed the modern sense of land left uncultivated for a time.
