A gamete is a reproductive cell, such as a sperm cell or an egg cell. In sexual reproduction, two gametes join together to form a new living thing. This is a biology term used in science and medicine.

gamete はドイツ語 Gamet を経て、ギリシャ語 gamete / gametes「妻・夫」および gamein「結婚する」に由来します。gamo- は『結びつく婚姻』の感覚をもち、monogamy や polygamy も同根。配偶子が『結びついて新しい個体の始まりになる細胞』と考えると名づけが腑に落ちます。
Gamete came into English through German Gamet. It goes back to Greek gamete and gametes, meaning "wife" and "husband," and to gamein, "to marry." The idea was that these cells join in a kind of union, so the word was built around marriage; related English words include monogamy and polygamy.
