複婚とは、一人の人が複数の配偶者と同時に婚姻関係を持つ制度や慣習です。多くの社会や宗教で、一定の条件を満たしたうえで認められてきた婚姻形態を指します。男性が複数の妻を持つ一夫多妻制や、女性が複数の夫を持つ一妻多夫制などを含みます。
Polygamy is the practice of being married to more than one person at the same time. It is discussed in legal, cultural, religious, and historical contexts. Rules and social views about it are very different across countries and societies.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
poly- を見たら「複数」を思い出す癖をつけると覚えやすい。polygon や polytheism と同じく many の感覚。後半の -gamy は monogamy や bigamy と並べると、「結婚の形」を表す語群だと整理できる。monogamy が一対一、bigamy が重婚、その延長で polygamy は複数の配偶者を持つこと。宗教・文化・法律の話で出やすい。紛らわしい polyamory は「複数愛」で、婚姻制度そのものを指す語ではない。
The prefix `poly-` means `many`, as in `polygon` or `polytheism`. Compare it with `monogamy`: `mono-` is one, `poly-` is many. That contrast makes `polygamy` much easier to remember.

polygamyはギリシャ語polygamiaに由来し、poly-「多い」＋gamos「結婚」から成る。monogamyやbigamyも同じgam-をもち、結婚の回数や形を数える発想がそのまま制度名になった語だ。
Polygamy comes from Greek polygamia, from poly- meaning "many" and gamos meaning "marriage." It originally referred quite directly to the state of having many marriages. The meaning stayed close to that structure as the word passed into later languages and then English. Related words include monogamy and bigamy.
