覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
poly- は「多い」、-gamy は「結婚」と考えると、polygamy は「複数の結婚」です。そこに -ist が付いた polygamist は「複婚をする人、支持する人」になります。一夫多妻の場合にも使えますが、単語そのものは男性だけに限定されません。
Break it into parts: `poly-` means many, `gam` is the same root as in marriage words, and `-ist` means a person who follows an idea or practice. Link it to `polygyny`, which names the system, and `polygamist`, the person connected with it. This helps separate it from `bigamist`, which is often about an illegal marriage situation.

polygamist の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語 poly-(多くの)+ gamos(結婚)+ -ist(人)の合成語。polygamyは「複数の結婚」が原義。同根語に monogamist(一夫一婦主義者)、bigamist(重婚者)がある。gamoは「結合」の意で、配偶子を意味する gamete も同根。
Polygamist is built from Greek poly- "many," gamos "marriage," and the suffix -ist for a person. It is closely related to polygamy, and can be compared with monogamist and bigamist. The core idea is a person connected with many marriages, from a root also seen in words such as gamete, which carries the older sense of union or marriage.
