複数の神々を信仰する宗教体系のこと。一神教の対義語にあたる。
Polytheism is the belief in or worship of more than one god. It is often used when talking about religions in history, mythology, and culture. It is the opposite of monotheism, which is belief in one god.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず対義語の monotheism（一神教）とセットで覚えると定着しやすい語です。mono- が「1」、poly- が「多い」なので、polytechnic, polygon などの poly- を見たときと同じく「複数」の感覚を持つと意味を取りやすくなります。後半の theism は atheism（無神論）や theist（神を信じる人）に出る形なので、「神 belief 系の語」とまとめると整理しやすいです。古代ギリシャ・ローマの宗教の説明で出やすく、monotheism との対比で読むと迷いません。
Learn it with `monotheism`. `mono-` means one, but `poly-` means many, like in `polygon` and `polytechnic`. The ending `-theism` is the same family as `theist` and `atheism`, so think: many + god-belief word.
