gimbal の語源・成り立ち Etymology
16世紀英語gimmal(双子の輪)の変形で、ラテン語gemellus(双子)に由来する。二つの輪が組み合わさって自由に回転する仕組みから、船舶の羅針盤や現代のカメラ安定装置の名称となった。関連語:gimmal ring(連環指輪)、Gemini(双子座)。
Gimbal developed from earlier English forms such as gimmal, a word used for linked or paired rings. That word ultimately traces through French to Latin gemellus, meaning “twin.” The idea of joined rings suited a mounting made from rings that pivot relative to one another. The term was used for supports holding shipboard compasses and other instruments before being extended to modern mechanical and motorized camera stabilizers.
