新ラテン語 Hemiptera に由来し、ギリシャ語 hemi-「半分」＋ pteron「翼」から成ります。前翅の基部だけが硬く先は柔らかい特徴を名にした語で、だから「半分の翅の虫」の意。関連語に hemisphere, pterodactyl があります。
"Hemiptera" comes from New Latin, based on Greek hemi- meaning "half" and pteron meaning "wing." The name was made for insects whose front wings are only partly hardened, so they seem "half-winged" in structure. The same Greek roots appear in English words like hemisphere and pterodactyl.
