Memory Tip

Recognize hooker as hook plus the person-forming ending -er, but do not assume that this structure proves the word’s historical origin. In the relevant sense, it is a slang term for a woman who sells sexual services. Its tone matters as much as its definition: it can sound crude, dismissive, or insulting. For neutral reporting, professional discussion, or respectful conversation, sex worker is normally the safer expression. Also remember that hooker has unrelated meanings in sports and other specialized contexts, so surrounding words determine the intended sense.

Etymology

また hook(鉤で引っかける=客を引く)との関連も指摘される。関連語: hook(引っかける)。

The origin of hooker in this sense is uncertain. It is associated in popular explanations with hook, perhaps through the idea of attracting or securing customers. Another often repeated account connects it with Corlear’s Hook, an area of nineteenth-century New York linked with prostitution, but this does not provide a secure, complete derivation. The story involving the American general Joseph Hooker is also not supported as the word’s true origin. Caution is therefore preferable to a single confident explanation.
