人を催眠状態に導く、つまり意識を集中させて暗示を受けやすい状態にすることを指す動詞。そこから転じて、強い魅力や言葉、動きなどによって相手をうっとりさせる、我を忘れるほど引きつけるという比喩的な意味でも使われる。
