Memory Tip
Recognize Ingram first as a proper name, normally written with a capital I. Its historical structure joins Ing, the name of a Germanic deity, with an element meaning “raven,” so an image of “Ing’s raven” can preserve the genuine word formation. Then use context to identify the role of the name: a signature by Ingram suggests a person, an entry on a family-name list suggests a surname, and Ingram within a company title identifies an organization. The name itself does not specify which individual or company is meant.

Etymology
関連名にIngrid(Ingの美)がある。
Ingram comes from a medieval Germanic personal name represented by forms such as Ingelram. It combines Ing, the name of a Germanic deity also known in Norse tradition, with a second element related to Old High German hram, “raven.” The compound can therefore be interpreted as “Ing’s raven.” It passed into English as a personal name and subsequently became established especially as a hereditary surname.
