junta はスペイン語で「会議・評議会」を意味し、さらにラテン語 iungere「結びつける」にさかのぼります。join や junction も同根で、もとは「人が集まって結びついた場」だった語が、権力を握る軍事政権を指すようになった流れが見えます。
Junta came into English from Spanish, where it meant a meeting, council, or committee. It goes back to Latin iungere, meaning "to join," the same root seen in join and junction. From the idea of people joined together in council, it later came to mean a group, especially a military one, that takes political power.
