inter-は「間に」、後半はラテン語calare「告げる」に由来。もとは暦に閏日を『間へ差し告げる』intercalareで、だからintercalationは物が既存の層のあいだへ割り込む感じを表す。calendarやintercalaryも同系。
Intercalation comes from Latin intercalare, made from inter- "between" and calare "to call out or announce." It first referred to inserting extra days into a calendar by officially announcing them between existing dates. From that, the word came to mean putting something into an already existing series or layer; compare calendar and intercalary.
