ラテン語interlocutor（対話する人）から。inter-（間で）+loqui（話す）+-tor（人）に分解できる。「互いの間で話す人」が原義。同じloqui語根を持つeloquent（雄弁な）やsoliloquy（独白）と親戚関係にある。
