interlocutor
対話者
解説 Definition
対話や会話の相手のこと。議論における話し相手を指す。
An interlocutor is a person who takes part in a conversation or dialogue. It is used in formal writing, interviews, debates, and language learning to mean the other speaker or one of the speakers. It is more formal than words like "conversation partner."
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
inter- は「間で」、-locutor は「話す人」と見て、「言葉を交わす相手」とまとめて覚えると定着しやすい。interview の inter と同じで、独り言ではなく相手のいる会話を連想するのがコツ。speaker や participant より、討論・面接・哲学対話のように、自分の前で受け答えする『相手役』を指す語。listener や audience のような受け身の聞き手ではなく、実際に応答する人だと押さえると混同しにくい。
See `inter-` as “between,” and connect `-locutor` with speaking. That gives you the idea of a person you speak with in a conversation. It is more specific than just `speaker` because it means the other person in the exchange.

interlocutor の語源・成り立ち Etymology
interlocutor は inter-「間で」+ locut「話す」+ -or「人」。ラテン語 interloqui「互いに話す」に由来し、会話の『あいだで言葉を交わす人』がそのまま対話者を表す。colloquial や soliloquy も同じ loqu-/locu-『話す』の仲間。
Interlocutor comes from Latin interlocutor, from interloqui "to speak between" or "to speak with each other." It combines inter- "between" with a form of loqui, meaning "to speak," plus -or for a person. So the word originally meant a person taking part in an exchange of speech, and it still keeps that sense. Related words include colloquial and soliloquy.
