Memory Tip
Learn koala as a complete animal name borrowed from an Australian Aboriginal language, not as a word to split into English prefixes or suffixes. Picture a gray koala sleeping in a eucalyptus tree and eating eucalyptus leaves. Use a koala for one animal and koalas for more than one. Although its rounded ears and body may look bear-like, a koala is a marsupial, so the informal expression koala bear is scientifically misleading. The tree, leaves, and Australian habitat form a reliable memory scene.

Etymology
Koala entered English from an Aboriginal language of the Sydney region, commonly identified as Dharug. Early English spellings varied before koala became standard. The source word has traditionally been interpreted as meaning “no drink” or “does not drink,” reflecting the animal’s ability to obtain much of its moisture from leaves, although exact historical interpretation of Indigenous forms can be difficult. The word is a direct borrowing rather than an English morphological formation.
