limelightはlime「石灰」+ light「光」で、19世紀に生石灰を炎で白熱させる強力な舞台照明を指しました。文字通り『石灰の光』が主役を照らしたため、そこから比喩的に「脚光・注目」の意味になったのです。limestoneやlightenが近い仲間です。
