lipoprotein の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語の「lipos(脂肪)」とドイツ語由来の「protein(タンパク質)」の合成語。proteinはギリシャ語「proteios(第一の)」から。脂質とタンパク質が結合した複合体を指す。関連語:lipid(脂質)、proteome(プロテオーム)。脂肪を運ぶタンパク質という構造がそのまま名前になっている。
Lipoprotein is a modern scientific compound formed from lipo-, meaning “fat” or “lipid,” and protein. The combining form lipo- comes from Greek lipos, “fat.” Protein was formed from Greek prōteios, meaning “primary” or “of first importance,” through the terminology of nineteenth-century chemistry. The name therefore describes the substance directly: a complex or particle containing both lipid and protein components.
