macro- は macro lens や macroeconomics の macro と同じで「大きい」、対になるのは micro-。-phage は phagocyte（食細胞）や engulf のイメージと結びつけると覚えやすいです。つまり macrophage は「大きく取り込む側の細胞」。免疫の話で bacteria や dead cells をのみ込み、後片づけをする場面と一緒に覚えると定着します。似た形の microphage などを見たときも、前半の macro / micro の違いで意味を切り分けられます。
