marseillaise の語源・成り立ち Etymology
フランスの港町 Marseille(マルセイユ)に形容詞語尾 -aise を付けた語で「マルセイユの(歌)」を意味する。1792年にマルセイユの義勇兵がパリ進軍時に歌ったことからこの名がついた。Marseille 自体はギリシャ語 Massalia に由来し、古代ギリシャ植民市であった。
Marseillaise is formed from Marseille, the name of the French port city, with the French feminine adjectival ending -aise. The song received this name after volunteers from Marseille sang it as they marched to Paris in 1792. Marseille itself continues Latin Massilia, from Greek Massalia, the name of the ancient Greek colony established on the site. The anthem’s title thus literally identifies it with Marseille.
