解説 Definition
脳と脊髄を包む膜（髄膜）の炎症。ウイルスや細菌などの感染が原因で、激しい頭痛や発熱、嘔吐、意識障害などを引き起こすことがある。適切な診断と治療を受けないと重症化する危険がある。
Meningitis is a serious illness in which the tissues around the brain and spinal cord become inflamed. It is usually caused by a virus or bacteria and needs medical attention. This is a medical term often used when talking about dangerous infections.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
病名の中では、まず語尾の -itis を見て「炎症」と反応できるようにすると覚えやすいです。arthritis, tonsillitis などと同じ型なので、mening- が対象部位、-itis が炎症という形で分けて見ると定着します。meninges（髄膜）や meningo- を含む複合語にもつながるので、「mening- を見たら膜・脳まわり、-itis なら炎症」とまとめて覚えるのが有効です。encephalitis など別の炎症名と並べて、どこが炎症を起こす病気かを区別すると混同しにくくなります。
The easiest memory hook is the ending `-itis`, which often means inflammation, as in `arthritis` or `tonsillitis`. Then `mening-` is the body part, and `-itis` is the problem. If you remember the word as `mening- + -itis`, it becomes much easier to recognize.

meningitis は現代ラテン語で、語幹はギリシャ語 meninx／mening-「膜」、接尾辞 -itis は「炎症」です。meninges や meningoencephalitis と同じく「膜が炎症を起こす」という成り立ちが直に「髄膜炎」を言い当てており、病名なのに構造が見える語です。
