mestizoはスペイン語で、後期ラテン語 mixticius「混ざったもの」にさかのぼります。核は miscere「混ぜる」で、mix- の発想そのままに「異なる血や系統が交わる人」を表すので、意味が形から見えます。mixやmixtureが同根です。
