接頭辞 mis-（誤った）と print（印刷する）の合成語。mis- は古英語 mis-（悪い・誤った）に由来し、print は古フランス語 preinte（押す）からラテン語 premere に遡る。関連語に mistype、misread がある。「誤って印刷されたもの」が原義。
