Statelessness is the condition of not being legally recognized as a citizen of any country. The word is used in law, migration, and human rights contexts because this situation can affect travel, identity papers, and legal protection.

state を「州」ではなく「国家」としてまず固定します。そこに homeless や powerless と同じ -less「〜がない」、darkness と同じ -ness「状態」が付くので、statelessness は「国家を持たない状態」と順に分解して思い出せます。a stateless person, cases of statelessness のように、人や事例を語る報道・国際問題の文脈でよく見ます。citizenship / nationality が得られない話と結びつけると記憶に残りやすく、statehood（国家としての地位）とは反対向きだと整理すると混同しにくいです。

statelessness は state「国家」に -less「ない」と -ness「状態」が重なった語。state はラテン語 status「立っている状態」に由来し、status や station も同じ stare「立つ」の仲間。つまり「どの国家にも立脚しない状態」から無国籍になる。
